She’s tall, she’s saucy and she doesn’t believe in pulling any punches when it comes to getting her point across. The voluptuous siren of Kollywood — Namitha — who recently caught up with her fans in the city, exhibited her undisputed attitude as she opened up to CT like never before. Giving us the inside dope on her latest Tamil project, Ilaignan, which is based on a novel written by the CM, she says, “I was honoured beyond words when I came to know that CM sir had me in mind while writing this character. In fact, he had specifically told Pa Vijay sir, my co-star, that he wanted me to embody this character as I fit the bill perfectly.”
So, what exactly is special about her role in this film, given that she has played a role with shades of grey in her previous film, Indra Vizha as well? Getting into character, Namitha, explains, “The film is a period drama set in the 1940s. I play a rich, snobby woman hailing from a mixed race — partly English, partly Indian. And let me warn you, I am a bitch of the highest order in the film. She wears those tilted Victorian hats, smokes expensive cigarettes (think Kate Winslet from Titanic) and has a nasty attitude to boot — take it or leave it. This makes the role so much fun to play. The script of the film incorporates many English dialogues into my character, to lend it more credibility and in a way, helps me ease into the role as well.”
Namitha is all praise for director Suresh Krissna, who is helming this ambitious project, which marks another career high for the actress, as she is dubbing in her own voice for the very first time. The actress remarks, “Suresh has been such a pleasure to work with. He has been uber-patient with me and gave me ample time to rehearse my lines, considering the fact that I’ve lengthy dialogues and that we were shooting the sound on location itself. I’ve great expectations from this role and I hope it will be remembered like Ramya Krishnan’s role as Nilambari in Padayappa.”
But the buxom babe is just not content with digging her fangs into meaty roles in Tamil. She is now a ‘hot property’ in Tollywood where directors want her to glam up their action movies with some butch action. Reveals Namitha, “I’m doing an action flick, Desadrohi, in which I play a cop. I’m also doing the Telugu remake of the Bollywood film Gangster. And, there is an upcoming Kannada film in which I play an undercover cop. I guess it’s my build that inspires directors to cast me in such action-centric roles.”
Namitha, who considers her role as CJ in the Ajith-starrer Billa as one of her most memorable roles, concludes, “I’m still waiting for more directors to approach me with thought-provoking scripts. I would love to do a role like Meera Jasmine’s in Sandakozhi. And, I am looking for opportunities to work with bigger actors.”
